Dietetics

Dietetics is the science of how nutrition affects our health. Scientific studies have shown how a change to our diet can help prevent or control a variety of health problems, including obesity, diabetes and coronary disease.

There is no shortage of nutrition advice in the media, but much of it lacks evidence and may come from unreliable sources. Dietitians, however, are the only regulated health professionals trained to assess, diagnose, and treat dietary and nutrition-related issues.

These pages outline the role of a dietitian, the training required to enter the profession, and how to locate a dietitian in your area.

Who is a dietitian?

Engineers carefully select the right materials to build something strong and reliable. Yet when it comes to our own bodies, we often make choices based on taste, convenience, or habit rather than what truly supports our health. A dietitian helps bridge that gap — guiding you to nourish your body with the right nutrients so you can build a healthier, stronger version of yourself.

Dietitians are regulated, highly trained health professionals who assess, diagnose, and manage dietary and nutrition-related problems at both individual and population levels.

What do dietitians do?

Dietitians translate nutrition science into practical, personalised guidance to promote health and manage diseases, supporting clients, patients, carers, and colleagues through education and tailored advice.

They play a key role in achieving and maintaining a healthy weight, managing chronic conditions, and preventing nutrition‑related diseases. With evidence‑based strategies and ongoing support, dietitians help individuals build long‑term habits that strengthen overall wellbeing.

We draw on the latest public‑health evidence and scientific research on food, health, and disease, translating it into practical guidance that supports informed lifestyle and dietary choices. When visiting your physician / Doctor, simply let the receptionist know that you would like an appointment with the dietitian.
